Dr. Stephen Weiner, the provost since 2007 is being replaced by Dr. Carol J. Erting in July of 2014. Alan Hurwitz was quoted on the Gallaudet University website:
“Dr. Carol Erting has been a part of the Gallaudet community for many years and is an ardent supporter of education for deaf and hard of hearing individuals,” said Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz. “Dr. Erting has immense institutional knowledge and I am fully confident she will be an effective leader for our faculty, staff, and students and continue to advance the programs and services offered by our university.” (T. People that don’t know who Carol is may question how she was involved with the University. For 15 years, she was a member of the Gallaudet Research Institute as Director of Culture and Communications Study Program. She was also a program chair of “The Deaf Way” in 1989.

The Gallaudet Research Institute is a key player in the study of American Sign Language and English among Deaf people that are from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. GRI has been the preeminent source of demographic and educational data in the united states about Deaf youth.
As somebody that was very involved with the GRI, Carol has a lot of background understanding and knowledge on the community. She has specialized focuses on language and culture, deaf communities, ethnographic educational research, and several other areas of knowledge which can be used in correlation to the new position she is to hold in July.
With that experience under her belt, she is currently the Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Continuing Studies and International Programs. She had began as the interim Dean of Graduate Schools et al. in 2009 but obtained the position permanently in 2010.
