Dr. Jonathan Webb had just won his second term as President for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf’s Board in May of 2021. When he was announced the winner, several members of the community reacted badly; however, there were many interpreters from the interpreting community who believed Webb had won fair and square. According to his letter of resignation on June 17, 2021, Webb cited the turmoil within RID as the reason for his resignation.
“As you all know, there has been quite a bit of turmoil regarding RID that has extended for a solid month. These upheavals within RID are nothing new. However, this one has a particular feel to it that needs special consideration.” (Jonathan Webb)
In this same paragraph, he has resigned from his position at the end of the term and his last day will be August 31, 2021. He then proceeds to discuss the importance of addressing audism and the deep hurt within RID.
“Given things that have been said over this last month, I’m pressed to wonder if this is one of those healing opportunities. I’m not sure that I can characterize my resignation as being a right or wrong decision. I do wonder, however, if this is an actual opportunity for people to see a hearing person who holds authority willingly, and happily, relinquishing all of it.” (Webb)
With that said, he also mentioned that there is a new CEO who is beginning July 1, 2021 and that person is Deaf. Many speculated that this person has been a member of RID for some time and is someone already a RID employee; however these are only speculations. “Please keep an eye out for communication on that. July 1 is just around the corner, so you can expect some messaging very soon.” (Webb)
