May 1 is interpreter appreciation day. There are various events going on today to honor interpreters and their hard work. Here are two social media based events to encourage people to thank their interpreters.

Gallaudet University has an event from noon to two o’clock  at the Jordan Student Academic Center in the Multiple Purpose Room (MPR) Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) has a facebook trend going on with the hashtag – #WeAreGIS and asking people to share it on their page, Galladuet GIS. (Be sure to follow them first.)

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is giving away a twenty percent discount at their online store which consists of books and products. Be sure to include “terpthanks14” at the check out to take advantage of the discount. It also requires the shopper to log into their account first. Promo code is good until May 2, 2014 at midnight EST.

People are also taking the time to tweet, post videos on YouTube, Facebook, and post on Google plus about Interpreter Appreciation Day.

It may be interpreter appreciation day on May 1, 2014 but that doesn’t mean that’s the only day to thank interpreters. Remember to thank them at the end of a job if they are a freelance interpreter. As employees like to be recognized for their hard work, they do too.

RID Executive Director, Shane Feldman also shared this video in honor of Interpreter Appreciation Day
